How Creating the Right Conditions For Deep Work Will Change Your Productivity Once & For All
When you can easily focus on meaningful tasks with intensity and without succumbing to distractions, you are able to do what is called “deep work.” This is when you are mastering challenging information and producing high quality results in short bursts of time. And although this might sound like a superpower of sorts, it’s actually a skill that anybody can learn if they actually put in some time and effort.
To learn how to put yourself into a deep work state, you need a somewhat ritualistic approach. First, you’ve got to find a physical location or space that’s exclusively for accomplishing deep work—somewhere free from known distractions. This could be a coffee shop, co-working space, or somewhere lost in the forest. Whatever works for you.
Once you’ve chosen your space, you will need to set aside time to get your work done. And you’ll need to stick to this. Decide how long you will work for and what exactly you will produce during that time. Do not allow anything to interfere with this plan. And make sure that you have everything that you will need to remain comfortable and energized while you work. Snacks, lunch, water, activities for your breaks, or music that helps you focus.
When you’re able to repeatedly engage in deep work sessions, you will find yourself reaching increased level of focus and productivity. And over time, this effect will compound on itself. You won’t notice distractions around you anymore or even the time that has passed since you began. Essentially you will find yourself in a state of flow—your brain will be so focused on what you’re doing that it won’t be able to pay attention to anything else. And once you’ve achieved this level of deep work, you’ll find yourself able to concentrate just about anywhere. As a bonus, you’ll also feel more motivated, confident, and happy during the entire process.
The more that you do this, the easier it will become. Your level of flow will deepen and so will your ability to produce high-quality work in a short period of time. You can even monitor your progress over time to see how much your output is increasing. Doing so will keep you inspired and empowered to set bigger goals for yourself.
